The article explains how the trends of tourism and nationality of foreign home buyers is reflected in Altinkum - Didim - perhaps this trend will continue for the American's?

Didim, has been a holiday destination for millions of Turkish, British and German tourists over the last 15 years but the face of tourism is changing rapidly in this authentically Turkish destination. Didim is a place with two names – the British call it Altinkum (meaning ‘Golden Sands’) and the rest of the world call it Didim, so you’d be forgiven if you were confused on the actual name but in the last year, the area (under both names!) has won several prestigious awards for its tourism facilities and to attract the tour operators of new countries. Didim is set to become more cosmopolitan during the tourist seasons.

We asked, one of the areas longest serving and most respected developers in Didim, why the area is expecting to receive so many new nationalities of tourists in 2008. Didim Sun Properties - Caglak Construction Ltd (est. 1987) www.didimsun.com is a fully licenced constructor and estate agency, operating in the whole of the Didim area - Altinkum, Didim, Akbuk, Yesiltepe, Yesilkent, Mavisehir and all the little villages in between. The personnel are a small, professional team of English and Turkish staff who all speak fluent English. The company aim is to provide complete peace of mind, before during and after the sales process and the company has an excellent reputation with its many clients of whom it has helped hundreds to buy their place in the sun over the last few years.

Besir Caglak, company spokesperson gave us his opinions on the future of tourism in the area. Mr Caglak explained that Didim is home to the world famous Ancient Greek Temple of Apollon - visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. Didim is centrally located for tourists who wish to explore many of Turkey's other historic beauties such as Ephesus, Pamukkale, Selcuk, Prienne, Miletus. The area is a historian's paradise!

Altinkum, Didim is less than an hour's drive from Kusadasi and Bodrum. One of Turkey's national parks in less than an hour away near Kusadasi and the beautiful Lake Bafa with its nature and bird reserves is a few minutes drive from Didim. Altinkum itself, boasts fine scuba-diving and fishing territory - not to mention the plethora of choice in cuisine, restaurants, beach clubs, local shops and of course the famous Turkish hospitality. English is widely spoken in Didim so no need to learn the lingo unless of course you wish to!

Altinkum, Didim, as can be seen from one of the maps attached, is just a short hop to many of the Greek Islands and many visitors to the area, take a boat from Altinkum harbour to either the Greek Islands of Kos and Samos or they travel along the Turkish coastline to Bodrum, Kusadasi, Akbuk or even just to one of the many private coves for a romantic afternoon. The choice is yours and transportation is in plentiful supply whether you wish to commission your own romantic gullet for the day or an evening trip under the stars, whether a large group fancy a day's fishing at sea or whether you prefer to take a gullet touring 5 islands and bays or the public ferry boat, the coastline offers something for everyone.

In 2007, the Turkish Government announced Didim to be a Tourism Development Region and millions of dollars of funding is being poured into the area to improve infrastructure and tourism facilities. This will continue until 2017. Two golf courses and full facilities are planned (awaiting developer bids currently) in Didim as well as there being a further 7 courses either complete or under construction within an hours drive from Didim.

Didim marina is currently under construction in Altinkum and completes in March 2009. The marina is said to be the largest in Europe, boasting 600 boats wet-side and 600 dry-docks. There will be a shopping centre, medical centre, heli-pad, two new 7 star hotels, to name just a few of the new facilities that will accompany the newest marina in Turkey.

Traditionally, Didim has been visited by mainly British and Central Europeans (as well as Turkish tourists from Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir) but in May 2008, cruise ships started to port at Didim (at the Altinkum harbour). To date, the cruise ships have already brought hundreds of American's and Japanese to this delightful area. Upon opening of the new marina, more cruise ships will visit the area and the name of Didim will become better known to a wider catchment area of tourists. To this effect, the majority of the foreign property owners currently in Didim are British and German (more than 10,000 properties are owned by foreign buyers in Didim alone) but as the other tour operators begin to sail, bus or fly into Didim, the area expects there to be become a more diverse base of foreign home owners and consequently, repeat tourists or often those foreign nationals choose to live here for several months at a time. Turkey is a country and life style that many fall in love with.

Didim Sun Properties - Caglak Construction Ltd are currently helping many buyers to make wise investments in this area BEFORE the marina is complete and the property prices rise too quickly. There is currently a lot of building in the area but demand is also high. With Turkey's targeting admission to Europe within the next 9 years, keen investors are trying to buy property to maximise their chances on return - as well as for all of the traditional reasons why foreign buyers are keen on Turkey - a wonderful holiday home or for retirement. With over 300 days of guaranteed sunshine every year (probably nearer to 330 days most years) and the superb property prices, the British and the Europeans cant resist Turkey. Will the American's be the next group to catch on to this area of Turkish delight?
