Area Information
Prenzlauer Berg encapsulates everything about Berlin. Situated in the centre of the city, it is east of the former Berlin Wall and this part of Berlin’s history resonates here. Prenzlauer Berg is young and old, historic and avant-garde, edgy and yet full of prams. Prenzlauer Berg is full of action and diversity and is a comfortable, accessible and fun place to live.
Location:
The main architecture of this area is from the turn of the century and the grand, ornate style predominates here more than in any other area of Berlin, a positive legacy of the communist era. While many buildings remain in their original state, some even sporting gunshots from WW2, Prenzlauer Berg is being gradually gentified and the old buildings returned to their former glory.
The area hosts many lovely historic churches including the Gethsemanekirche as well as the largest synagogue of Germany. It’s also in Prenzlauer Berg where the first water tower was built and remains a landmark of Kollwitzplatz.
Kollwitzplatz together with Kastanienallee, Hermansplatz and the Kulturbrauerei (used to be a brewery in the 1900s) are among the most popular places for bars, restaurants and cafés in Berlin. In fact the concentration of cafes in this part of town is remarkable.
Often situated around leafy residential squares, alongside fresh food markets, flea markets, designer boutiques and gourmet shops, contributing to the overall “village” feeling of Prenzlauer Berg.
